Help! how do I stop procrastination?
4 comments so farI really need help. I have procrastination problems. I was wondering if there are any tips that could help me with this problem. I have been like this for over ten years and I need to know what to do. I really think that it’s a real mental disorder and not just an excuse. I have tried making lists, using post-it notes, emailing my self, etc. and nothing has worked so far.
If someone could give me some help, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Tell yourself “Do It Now”
Then do it.
carry a journal with you every where you go. i seen a video of it in college. have a journal with you and jot down what you have to do in the day and set times for each task.
Each day, try to do just one thing that you’ve put off doing. Don’t force yourself to try to get everything done all at once, it will only make you feel worse when you don’t do it. Start out with small things. Try it for a while, maybe a week or so, then tell yourself you will do just two things each day that you’ve put off doing. Do that for a while and then try three things, four things, etc. until you start feeling more comfortable tackling the larger things you need to do. I speak from experience. It’s very tough to conquer procrastination, but if you just take it one step at a time, and don’t beat yourself up if you slip up once in a while and don’t get things done, you can change your mental image from being a procrastinator to being someone who gets things accomplished.
Best wishes to you!!!
I’ll tell ya later …
lol … OK ~ someone had to do that. =)
Guess what? I suffer from the same disease my friend. Have all my life. Like right now … I’m supposed to be doing work and here I am on Q & A. It drives my nutty sometimes. And you’re right … it does tend to be a type of psychosis. I have researched a lot about it and it’s just the way some people function. It has to do with how you are raised … etc …
All through college I never did a d*mn thing until the night before it was due. I’d be up allllllllllllllll night typing papers .. studying … and wanna die the next day ~ swearing the next time I’d start earlier ~ but to no avail. I have come to some peace with it at this time in my life. If this is how you function it is a hard habit to break because you become addicted to being “under pressure” and it becomes the only way you can operate.
The only thing that’s ever worked for me (and a psychologist I work with suggested this) is lists. I know you’ve tried this, but the key is to NOT overwhelm yourself. You have to literally “train” yourself by starting with only a couple of things on your list. Otherwise, you see the entirety of it and never attempt to complete it. This has helped me tremendously because a big part of being a procrastinator is being unorganized. It’s a double whammy and so exhausting.
Start each morning closing your eyes and envisioning yourself getting the few things on your list done before you go to bed. Then get up and get going. Starting in THE hardest part. Reward yourself or do something for yourself when you finish your list. If all else fails … go to a psychologist. Many times they can help you by giving you the tools you need to conquer your weaknesses. Most of all … don’t dwell on it all the time or it will become more and more ingrained. Put your energy towards something else and keep as busy as you can getting things done … one at a time.
Hope this helped a little … =)
