How does Facebook establish the list of suggested friends?

I’m assuming from previous emails but I don’t remember ever emailing a couple of these people.

    facebook lists friends suggestions using couple of factors

    your network
    mutual friends
    your state(married or not)
    etc

    Suggested friends are like if some one is my friend and he/she added any one and if the network is same so it makes the friend suggestion one more reason is it depends on mutual friends.

    i don’t understand how facebook can suggest my son’s babysitter from 3 years ago….or an ex co worker that i havent seen in 2 years. how do they know this information? it can’t possibly be random….kinda scares me…
