Tom "Big Al" Schreiter has some great information on marketing your business without being a 'pain in the b###' to your friends, family and the world at large. He also has great tips on recruiting new members for your team.

Along with getting into a free mentoring group, I almost insist that all of my team go to his site at Fortunenow.com and sign up for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING FREE this man puts out. Also sign up for his newsletter. He doesn't sell your email address or spam you, but sends great tips....

Also, many people are creating youtube videos. They say it is the wave of the future in marketing and advertising. All you need is a web cam.

When I started my home based business, I also joined two of the local Chamber of Commerce(s). Keep one thing in mind though when doing something like this. Most people will not immediately purchase your products/services and I dont suggest you go in with both barrells blazing or you will turn people off. I started out by just meeting others at the functions. I used 'Big Al's' One minute presentation technique when asked what I do. Over time, people will develop a know, like and trust with you then you will really see your local business take off through word of mouth... that is, of course you have a 'value' product to offer.

Also you might want to use this same technique and see if there are any meetups in your area that interest you... you can find that info at meetup.com

Ruth, Many who join as distributors in a home based business feel the same as you do. It is great that you are thinking of ways to build business outside of the traditional way. If you owned a coffee shop you wouldn't just invite your friends and family, right?
It is great to see there is others out there who want to treat there distributorship like a business. Keep looking and you will succeed. Be aware of the many things out there. Take your time to get educated before you spend your money. If you waste money it can take you away from being successful or even out of the game. I would be happy to share some of my personal favorites that you can evaluate, if you want to send me a message. I hope this will help you to keep your dreams alive.
BEST WISHES!

I agree with the last answer. How you advertise really depends on the types of product and services you have to offer. Through my experience I've seen lots of small business waste time just advertising to just anyone.

In order for your advertising to be effective, you have to be targeting the right market. Even when you're networking you should look at the types of business in that group.

Furthermore, when you think about advertising, don't think of it as bugging people. Our culture is immune to advertising. In whatever forum of advertising you chose to go with, if the prospect is interested in your offering they will respond. At the end of the day it is all a numbers game and bottom line is mailing, posters, emailing and voice broadcasting works. If it is targeted to the right group.

A lot depends on what your business is. I recommend getting 'Networking with Millionaires and their Advisors' to anyone starting a new business.

Ask your friends and family to tell thier friends and family.
Do a cross promotion with another local business.
Use the internet!
Join kiwanas, sertoma, or another networking club.

You can advertise for free under Craigslist.org's services section.

You can also print out t-shirts or bumperstickers with your company's name and have your friends and family wear them/put them on their cars.
